High-altitude cities show how urban life adapts to mountain settings. This guide looks at major population centers above the lowlands, where elevation is part of both the landscape and daily life.
These ten profiles are a selection, not a world ranking. Each population reference names its year and boundary; some cover a municipality, others a wider administrative territory. Elevations also need a reference: a weather station, an urban center, and a whole mountain district are not interchangeable. The older census counts below are historical context, not estimates of how many people live there today.

Kunming, China

Dated population reference - About 8.46 million in the prefecture-level city, 2020 census. This administrative territory is wider than the continuously built-up city.
Elevation reference - 1,891 meters for downtown Kunming in the municipal overview.
Kunming is the capital of Yunnan province in southwestern China, with Dianchi Lake an important part of its setting. The city’s visitor account describes the lake and Western Hills, giving a more useful starting point for understanding the city’s surroundings.

Puebla De Zaragoza, Mexico

Dated population reference - 1,692,181 in Puebla municipality, 2020 census; not the metropolitan area.
Elevation reference - 2,160 meters for the municipal seat in INEGI’s geographic table. This is a reference location, not the elevation of every neighborhood.
Puebla sits in a high valley in central Mexico. Its historic center offers another way to read the city: UNESCO describes the cathedral, churches, and tiled buildings. The walls covered in azulejo tiles are part of that protected architectural character.

Mexico City, Mexico

Dated population reference - 9,209,944 in the Mexico City federal entity, 2020 census. The wider metropolitan population is a different measure.
Elevation reference - About 2,240 meters in the city tourism office’s overview; parts of the territory are higher.
Mexico City combines a densely built urban center with a federal territory that also reaches into the mountains. Its urban region extends beyond that administrative boundary, including neighboring Ecatepec in the State of Mexico.

Ecatepec De Morelos, Mexico

Dated population reference - 1,645,352 in Ecatepec de Morelos municipality, 2020 census. Count it separately from, not in addition to, a metropolitan total that already includes it.
Elevation reference - About 2,250 meters at the reference location described in the 2004 official planning gazette. The municipality also includes higher terrain.
Ecatepec is a municipality in the State of Mexico on the northeastern side of the Mexico City urban region. Its separate municipal government and census count do not mean a visitor will see a sharp break in the built-up city at the boundary.

Sana’a, Yemen

Dated population reference - 1,747,834 for Amanat al-Asimah in the 2004 census published by Yemen’s National Information Center. This is an old administrative count, not a current population estimate.
Elevation reference - About 2,200 meters for the Old City’s mountain-valley setting, according to UNESCO; not an average for the whole modern capital territory.
This is a geography and heritage profile, not a recommendation to travel to Yemen. As checked on November 1, 2026, the UK government advises against all travel to Yemen. Check your own government’s current advice; a heritage listing does not establish that a visit is safe.
Sana’a lies in a mountain valley in Yemen. UNESCO’s Old City account describes its multistory tower houses, mosques, gardens, and long settlement history. The heritage description concerns the Old City, not the full boundary used for a modern population total.

Xining, China

Dated population reference - 2,476,900 across Xining’s administrative territory at year-end 2024, as reported in the municipal statistical bulletin hosted by Huangzhong district. It includes the city’s districts and counties, not only the urban core.
Elevation reference - About 2,275 meters for the urban area in China Weather’s city introduction.
Xining is Qinghai’s provincial capital in the Huangshui River valley. The city’s 2013 transport project description places it in that valley, a more specific setting than treating the whole Tibetan Plateau as one uniform landscape.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Dated population reference - 2,739,551 for Addis Ababa City Administration in the Ethiopian Statistical Service’s 2007 national census table. This historical count should not be read as today’s city population.
Elevation reference - 2,354 meters at Addis Ababa Bole meteorological station, according to the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute. This is a station elevation, not a citywide average.
Addis Ababa is Ethiopia’s capital and the seat of the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, as described by the city-owned news service. Its role in diplomacy is part of the life of this highland capital.

Bogota, Colombia

Dated population reference - 7,412,566 for Bogota D.C. in DANE’s adjusted 2018 census results, compared with 7,181,469 enumerated. The adjusted total accounts for estimated census omissions; neither figure includes the whole surrounding metropolitan region.
Elevation reference - About 2,625 meters in the city’s location guide. Higher viewpoints and rural mountain areas should not be assigned that same height.
In Bogota, the eastern hills are a useful orientation point. The city’s location guide explains the numbered street-and-carrera grid and its relationship to those hills. Streets generally run east-west and carreras north-south.

Quito, Ecuador

Dated population reference - 2,679,722 in Quito’s Metropolitan District, 2022 census. The district includes urban and rural parishes, rather than only the compact historic city.
Elevation reference - About 2,850 meters in UNESCO’s short description of the historic city. Its detailed account uses another reference height, so this is not a precise average for the whole district.
Quito’s historic center sits in an Andean setting. UNESCO highlights its churches and the meeting of Indigenous and European artistic traditions, including the work associated with the Quito school of art.

El Alto, Bolivia

Dated population reference - 885,825 in El Alto municipality in the final 2024 census figures reproduced in UNFPA’s municipal profile. This is not a combined La Paz-El Alto metropolitan total.
Elevation reference - About 4,150 meters in the municipality’s adjusted 2021-2025 development plan. The territory spans a much wider height range; that reference is not the elevation of every address.
El Alto stands beside La Paz on Bolivia’s high plateau. Its municipal history dates the creation of the separate municipal section to March 6, 1985, followed by city status in 1988. Its settlement history predates those administrative changes; a new municipality does not mean a place had no earlier urban life.
