You might be surprised at just how similar Chicago and London are. Both cities are famous for skyscraper lined rivers that mark the areas of where they were founded. They are also both places where the locals are crazy about their local sports teams. But one of our favorite similarities between the two metropolises is that both are composed of dozens of adjacent neighborhoods that feel like a town within a sea of towns.
Over the course of the last century or so, these cities have experienced a change in their urban atmospheres as well. The immigrant communities that triggered waves of growth are now ingrained into each city’s social character. Their architectural traditions have evolved into the modern era, and areas that were once filled with warehouses and meatpacking complexes are now made up of loft apartments and trendy restaurants.
There are parts of London and Chicago that are more similar than others, however. Read more below about what neighborhoods in each city that we think resemble each other the most.
The Chicago population references below use CMAP’s June 2026 community snapshots and their 2020-2024 American Community Survey five-year estimates. They describe community areas, not exact outlines of every named neighborhood. London’s familiar neighborhood names do not form one matching set of census wards, so this comparison does not present invented ward-group totals as directly comparable measures.

West Loop And Fulton Market Vs Borough And Bermondsey

Two food-and-restaurant districts where working-market history sits alongside newer places to eat.
Chicago Reference: CMAP’s Near West Side snapshot reports 68,165 residents using 2020-2024 ACS five-year estimates. This is a community-area reference, not an exact outline of every place named in the pairing. Example connection: Green and Pink lines at Morgan. Check current service for your journey.
For Borough and Bermondsey, choose the actual streets and destinations you want to visit rather than treating the pair as one census district. Borough Market’s visitor guide places it beside London Bridge station, with Jubilee, Northern, and National Rail connections. Bermondsey Street and Bermondsey station are different destinations; check the walk or connection that fits your plan.
Why They Pair: Chicago’s Fulton-Randolph Market District designation recognizes a working-market landscape, while the city’s land-use plan addresses the combination of existing jobs and new investment. Across the Atlantic, Borough Market is still a functioning food market. The comparison works best as a look at changing uses, not a claim that food trading vanished from both areas.
Where It Breaks: Borough Market has regular Tuesday-Sunday market hours, with holiday exceptions. You can browse traders as well as eat there. Fulton Market offers a different mix of restaurants and businesses, so choose an actual venue rather than expecting the same market visit. If Padella is on your list, check its current arrangements. Best for food travelers who enjoy the differences as much as the resemblance.

Wicker Park And Bucktown Vs Shoreditch

Migration, independent businesses, and later redevelopment give these areas useful points of comparison.
Chicago Reference: CMAP’s West Town snapshot reports 88,164 residents using 2020-2024 ACS five-year estimates. This is a community-area reference, not an exact outline of every place named in the pairing. Example connection: Blue Line at Damen. Check current service for your journey.
Shoreditch is a neighborhood name, not one agreed census outline. Use TfL’s current map to choose between the stations serving your actual destination, including Shoreditch High Street on the Windrush line. A restaurant near Brick Lane and a hotel elsewhere in the area may involve different walks and connections.
Why They Pair: West Town’s Polish history survives around the Milwaukee, Ashland, and Division junction; the Home Bank and Trust national-register nomination describes that Polish Downtown setting. In London, the London Museum traces Huguenot silk weaving in Spitalfields. These are different migration histories, not equal-sized refugee movements or proof of the same industry in both places.
Where It Breaks: Wicker Park, Bucktown, Shoreditch, and Spitalfields each cover more than a single attraction or statistical boundary. Plan around the places that interest you, such as Old Spitalfields Market, rather than using one neighborhood label as a guarantee of nightlife, atmosphere, or walking distance. Check the venue and the route for the time you intend to go.

Pilsen Vs Brixton

Two areas where migration history is visible in cultural institutions and places of trade.
Chicago Reference: CMAP’s Lower West Side snapshot reports 33,446 residents using 2020-2024 ACS five-year estimates. This is a community-area reference, not an exact outline of every place named in the pairing. Example connection: Pink Line at 18th. Check current service for your journey.
For Brixton, start with the destination rather than an unverified combination of four wards. Brixton’s Victoria line connection is useful, but check current journeys to Oxford Circus rather than counting on a fixed travel time or a seat. Allow separate time for the market streets and any booked cultural visit.
Why They Pair: Chicago’s landmark record dates Thalia Hall to 1892 and its designation to October 25, 1989, with a theater modeled on Prague’s Old Opera House. In Brixton, Historic England records Market Row in 1928, Granville Arcade in 1935-1938, and the market complex’s listing on March 31, 2010, recognizing the importance of its postwar Caribbean history. Windrush Day commemorates June 22, 1948; the National Archives distinguishes that familiar date from June 21 in the passenger list. A neighborhood’s history includes more people and movements than the arrival of one ship.
Where It Breaks: the National Museum of Mexican Art offers free admission; check its current visiting hours. Checked November 1, 2026, Black Cultural Archives accepts bookings for research, learning workshops, and events, but says it is not yet open for ordinary walk-ins apart from selected open days. That is not the same as being closed to all visitors. Check Brixton Village’s venue-specific hours separately. Best for culture travelers willing to plan around the institution they want to visit.

Lincoln Park Vs Notting Hill

Two neighborhoods the movies made, both with a harder history than the postcard.
Chicago Reference: CMAP’s Lincoln Park snapshot reports 67,987 residents using 2020-2024 ACS five-year estimates. This is a community-area reference, not an exact outline of every place named in the pairing. Example connection: Red and Brown lines at Fullerton; Purple Line Express during weekday rush periods. Check current service for your journey.
Notting Hill is not a single ward. Pick the part of the area that interests you, whether that is Portobello Road or a different residential street, then check the nearest station and route. TfL’s map distinguishes the Underground lines and stations; one neighborhood name does not identify every useful connection.
Why They Pair: public space and residential streets help shape both visits, but their histories differ. The Chicago Park District’s history describes the transition from cemetery land to an expanding lakefront park. For Notting Hill, the London Museum distinguishes Claudia Jones’s indoor Caribbean carnival in January 1959 from Rhaune Laslett’s 1966 outdoor festival. Racism, community organizing, music, and later participants all belong in that history; it cannot be reduced to one event or founder.
Where It Breaks: Lincoln Park Zoo offers free general admission. In London, check the Portobello Road Market program for your chosen day rather than assuming Friday has the same stalls as Saturday or that Sunday has no market activity. The 2026 Carnival street parades took place on August 30 and 31; those dates have passed. Use the organizer’s next published program if Carnival is the reason for your trip. These areas suit different kinds of family outing, not one interchangeable experience.

Hyde Park Vs Bloomsbury

Two university districts where a residential count tells only part of the street-level story.
Chicago Reference: CMAP’s Hyde Park snapshot reports 30,599 residents using 2020-2024 ACS five-year estimates. This is a community-area reference, not an exact outline of every place named in the pairing. Example connection: Metra Electric or a CTA bus for the chosen destination. Check current service for your journey.
For Bloomsbury, distinguish the named district from a particular electoral ward. Museums, university buildings, homes, offices, and garden squares bring different patterns of use. A resident count does not measure everyone present during a working day, or show how busy an individual street will feel.
Why They Pair: universities and museums give both areas reasons to visit beyond their residential streets. Choose the institution or collection you want to see, then leave time for the surrounding public spaces. The pairing is about the kind of day you can plan, not a claim that the districts have the same population or urban form.
Where It Breaks: Hyde Park has Metra Electric rail service and CTA buses, but no CTA ‘L’ station in the neighborhood. Use the actual route to your destination rather than reading that as no train at all. Bloomsbury’s connections include the Tube and the separate Elizabeth line at Tottenham Court Road. The British Museum’s permanent collection has free admission, with advance booking recommended; exhibitions can have separate tickets. The Obama Presidential Center opened to the public on June 19, 2026, following the June 18 ceremony. Its Museum uses timed-entry tickets, while most campus spaces are free to visit.

Logan Square Vs Peckham

Two places where older infrastructure has found a new public use.
Chicago Reference: CMAP’s Logan Square snapshot reports 71,192 residents using 2020-2024 ACS five-year estimates. This is a community-area reference, not an exact outline of every place named in the pairing. Example connection: Blue Line for the station nearest your destination. Check current service for your journey.
Peckham and Peckham Rye are not interchangeable statistical outlines. The council’s park guide distinguishes the park from the common and notes their different access hours. For the high street, rooftop venues, or green space, choose the actual destination before planning the journey. Do not infer a neighborhood’s density from an undefined group of wards or an incorrect park-area figure.
Why They Pair: Logan Square’s headline attraction is The 606, 2.7 miles of elevated freight line reopened as a trail on June 6, 2015. Peckham’s is a multistory car park, where Bold Tendencies listed its 2026 rooftop season from May 15 to September 12. Frank’s Cafe shares the rooftop setting, while Peckham Levels occupies floors below. Check the venues’ current programs separately; the quoted rooftop dates are now past.
Where It Breaks: The 606 is a trail outing, while the Peckham rooftop depends on the venue’s season and program. Check current trail notices, market dates, and rooftop opening information before building a day around them. Logan Square’s green boulevards and farmers market make a different visit from Peckham’s high street and cultural venues. Best for repeat visitors who want to look beyond the central sights.

Planning This With Other People, Honestly

If you are planning these pairs with other people, compare priorities before filling the days. A shared board does not resolve differences in taste; it gives you somewhere to put them while changes are still easy. If you are traveling solo, use the same approach to separate the places you care about from the ones that can wait.
Three places it earns its keep. Date-locked items need a current check: reserve a Museum entry time at the Obama Center and check the next rooftop or Carnival program, rather than booking around the past 2026 dates above. Two currencies: check the displayed total, taxes, any service charge, and the tipping policy for each venue or booking rather than applying one rule to every bill. Pace: Hyde Park uses Metra Electric rather than the CTA ‘L’ and Peckham has no Tube, so if half your group has been planning six neighborhoods a day, better to find out on a screen.
Put the pairs on a board, let everyone add one thing they care about, then cut the list together.

Plan The Trip

Use these pairings to plan a visit to either city, or compare them if you are considering both. Check flights, dates, and the local journeys before combining them in one itinerary. Choose the season around the activities you want, not a claim that one month is ideal for everyone. Build the board for yourself, then invite others if they are coming.
