Follow North America’s transport networks and separate cities begin to form larger patterns. Waterways, railways, and highways connect population centers into urban regions that can cross state and national borders. Here is how those megalopolises take shape.
A megalopolis joins several cities in a regional description; it is not necessarily one government or an official census unit. Researchers and transport agencies can use different boundaries for the same corridor. The profiles below also overlap, notably around southern Ontario, so their populations cannot simply be added together. The figures need their own dates and definitions before they can support a current size ranking.
The five regions below illustrate how neighboring cities can form larger urban corridors. Boundaries and population estimates depend on the definition used.
The Quebec City-Windsor Corridor
The Quebec City-Windsor corridor links cities across southern Quebec and Ontario, including Toronto and Montreal. VIA Rail’s corridor routes provide one practical way to explore that geography, but a rail service map does not establish a single population boundary.
Choose the cities you want to visit, then plan each connection. VIA’s October 25, 2026 schedule change is a reminder to check actual-date services rather than assuming every corridor journey runs on the same pattern. The regional and metropolitan totals listed here need compatible geographic definitions and reporting years before being compared.
Dated metropolitan examples - Statistics Canada’s 2021 Census comparison gives Toronto 6,202,225, Montreal 4,291,732, and Ottawa-Gatineau 1,488,307 residents. These are three separate census metropolitan areas, not a total for the entire Quebec City-Windsor corridor or for the municipalities alone.
The Southern California Megalopolis
For Southern California, first decide whether the comparison stops at the US border. UCLA’s LASANTI research examines a binational region connecting Los Angeles, San Diego, and metropolitan Tijuana. That is not the same territory as a US-only group of counties.
The connection is economic as well as geographic, but the research also examines inequality within the region. A large combined economy does not tell you how income is distributed or what a particular neighborhood is like. Keep the regional scope in view rather than treating a GDP ranking as a description of every place along the coast.
Dated research reference - UCLA’s October 15, 2024 LASANTI paper describes more than 24 million people across urbanized Southern California and metropolitan Tijuana. This is the paper’s binational study region, not a US-only county sum or a freshly calculated 2026 census total.
The Mexico City Megalopolis
The Mexico City region illustrates why a metropolitan area and a wider megalopolis need separate definitions. Mexico City is the central reference point, but a regional description can include other metropolitan centers and the land between them. It should not be read as one uninterrupted city.
Mexico’s Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis describes protected natural areas within its region. Those landscapes matter alongside the urban centers. A regional average cannot establish the density of its least populated neighborhoods; compare a specific municipality or local area when that is the question you want to answer.
Before comparing this region with a US city, match the population year to the same boundary and land-area definition. A municipal total, the Valley of Mexico metropolitan area, and a wider megalopolis answer different questions. For a journey, start with the actual cities and the connections between them.
Regional scope - The environmental commission’s 2023 account names Mexico City and the states of Mexico, Hidalgo, Morelos, Puebla, Queretaro, and Tlaxcala as participating governments. That coordination scope does not make their entire populations one continuous city, or establish the same boundary as the Valley of Mexico metropolitan area.

The Northeast Corridor
Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C., form a useful starting point for understanding the northeastern urban corridor. The Federal Railroad Administration uses Northeast Corridor for the rail spine between Washington and Boston. A rail route is not the boundary of a census population region.
For a trip, compare the stations and connections between the cities you actually want to visit. For a population comparison, ask which counties or metropolitan areas are included and for which year. The concentration of government, businesses, and universities does not by itself establish continuous urban land or a universal density ranking.
Transport reference - The Federal Railroad Administration describes a 457-mile rail corridor anchored by Washington Union Station, New York Penn Station, and Boston South Station. That is a route-length measure, not the land area or population of a statistical megalopolis.
The Great Lakes Megalopolis
The Great Lakes profile crosses the US-Canada border and includes urban centers around the lakes. Its exact extent depends on the regional definition, and parts overlap with the Quebec City-Windsor corridor discussed above. Do not treat the two profiles as separate populations that can be added together, or assume a single official boundary establishes the region’s rank.
Shipping is a concrete link between these cities. The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway authority describes an integrated waterway between the lakes and the Atlantic, carrying cargo such as iron ore, grain, and steel products. That helps explain the region’s industrial connections without making every city part of the same uninterrupted built-up area.
Waterway reference - The Seaway authority describes a 3,700-kilometer navigation system from the Atlantic to the head of the Great Lakes. That waterway connects a wider trade geography than a single city or metro. It does not supply a census boundary for a 59-million-person region.

Takeaways
1.
A megalopolis is a regional concept, not a single municipal population count.
2.
Check the geographic definition behind a comparison and plan travel between its cities as separate journeys.
